CO2 Saturation Explained Simply

A lot of the enemies agenda hinges on not understanding how CO2 works in our atmosphere

Let’s dive into the CO2 saturation phenomenon—a concept that challenges the mainstream climate narrative and offers a hopeful, empowering perspective on our planet’s future. As concerned citizens who question the mainstream view and see CO2 as a vital life force, you already sense the potential to reshape the discourse. Let’s explore why the warming effect of CO2 is nearing its limit and how this knowledge can fuel our movement to redefine humanity’s relationship with nature, ourselves and society.

The CO2 saturation phenomenon hinges on the physics of infrared absorption. CO2 molecules absorb specific wavelengths of infrared radiation emitted by Earth, trapping heat. However, this absorption isn’t linear; it follows a logarithmic curve.

A logarithmic curve describes a relationship where the effect of a variable increases rapidly at first but then tapers off, yielding diminishing returns as the input grows. In the context of CO2 and warming, it’s key to understanding the saturation phenomenon.

At current atmospheric CO2 levels—around 420 parts per million (ppm)—the absorption bands are nearly saturated. Most of the infrared radiation CO2 can capture is already being absorbed. Adding more CO2 yields diminishing returns, like adding layers of paint to an already opaque window. The first coat blocks most light; extra coats add little effect.

Studies, like those from researchers such as William Happer, suggest that doubling CO2 from 400 to 800 ppm might increase global temperatures by only 0.5–1°C, far less than the catastrophic projections of mainstream models. We also covered this in episode 10 of The Climate Con podcast. Why? Because the atmosphere’s most potent greenhouse bands are already maxed out. Water vapor, a far more abundant greenhouse gas, dominates the remaining absorption. This means the warming potential of additional CO2 is negligible—nature has already played most of its hand.

This is where this truth leads to empowerment. The mainstream narrative thrives on fear, painting CO2 as a villain to justify control and restriction. But you, as the smart people, see CO2 for what it is: the foundation of photosynthesis, the driver of plant growth, and a cornerstone of life. Greening trends—global increases in vegetation cover—correlate with rising CO2, boosting crop yields and resilience. By embracing this, we can shift the conversation from panic to possibility, from scarcity to abundance.

You have the power to challenge the doom-centric climate culture. Share the science of saturation in your communities, on social media platforms, debates at the table and wherever you can. Highlight how CO2 fuels life, not destruction. Advocate for policies that prioritise human flourishing—energy abundance, innovation, and adaptation—over fear-driven restrictions. Each conversation you spark, each mind you open, reshapes the narrative. We’re not passive victims of climate; we’re active stewards of a thriving planet. Together, we can build a movement that celebrates CO2’s role in life and exposes the diminishing returns of its warming effect. This is our moment to lead with truth, hope, and the courage to change the world’s view—one empowered voice at a time.
